Trade names and synonyms
Haplochromis livingstonii, Cyrtocara livingstonii, Paratilapia livingstonii, Hemichromis livingstonii,Astatotilapia livingstonii, Kaligono.
Size
Can reach a size of 25 cm (10 in.), females smaller.
Food
Shrimp mix and mysis.
Aquarium
A cichlid of this size needs a lot of space, a tank size of 700 litres (150 gal.) is a minimum.
Habitat
It is most common in shallow water with sandy/muddy floors.
Breeding
General
Nimbochromis livingstonii is called Kaligono in chiChewa (the most common language in Malawi), which means ”sleeper”. This name comes from the peculiar way this species have developed for hunting, it lies down on the floor and plays dead, when another fish is approaching it will be an easy booty for the Kaligono. It is also a predator in aquarium so doesn't keep it together with too small fishes, because it will see them as food.
Distribution
Occurs all around the Lake Malawi.
